Black Canyon of the Gunnison NPBlack Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was established in 1999, the 55th of America's National Parks to be designated. Located in western Colorado, it's known as the nation's darkest canyon because the sun is blocked out by narrow granite cliffs. After 2 million years of erosion, the Gunnison River has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. The rim of Black Canyon sits at 8,000 feet above sea level and some of the walls reach 2,700 feet above the river.
