Petrified ForestPetrified Forest National Park was established in 1962, the 30th of America's National Parks to receive designation. The park is named for its incredible deposits of petrified wood. Colors in this fossilized forest come mainly from three minerals: pure white from quartz, purple and blue from manganese oxides, and brown, red, and yellow hues from iron oxides. Evidence of over 10,000 years of human history can be found in the park, including over 1,000 archeological and historical sites. |
