KatmaiKatmai National Park was established in 1980, the 44th of America's National Parks to receive designation. Located on a peninsula in southern Alaska, the park and preserve's wild landscapes span tundra, dense forests, lakes, and mountains. In late summer, rivers rush down the great Alaskan ranges and fill the stair-step waterfalls in Katmai with sockeye salmon. Large numbers of fishing brown bears are drawn to the salmon-filled falls, with as many as 72 bears seen at one time! |
