Visitors are encouraged to "get in hot water at Hot Springs National Park"—that's why the area was set aside in 1832. The natural water that comes out of Hot Springs Mountain at an average temperature of 143 degrees Fahrenheit is cooled down for use in bathing. The National Park Service sends this thermal water to the bathhouses and public fountains.
